The 4Cs

THE CUT

A diamond’s cut is the most critical factor influencing its brilliance. The way a diamond is cut determines how light interacts with its facets, reflecting and refracting to create its signature sparkle.

The Gemological Institute of America (GIA) grades diamond cuts from Excellent to Poor, based on proportions, symmetry, and polish. Ideal proportions allow light to be maximally reflected through the top of the diamond, creating a dazzling effect, while poor cuts cause light leakage, diminishing brilliance.

The three main types of diamond cuts are:
Brilliant Cut – Maximises fire and scintillation
Step Cut – Emphasises clarity and transparency
Mixed Cut – Blends both qualities

At PurpleMay, we select only Excellent or Very Good cut diamonds, ensuring maximum brilliance through precision craftsmanship. Each diamond is expertly cut to achieve perfect symmetry and proportions, allowing light to reflect and refract optimally, creating extraordinary fire and sparkle.

The CLARITY

Clarity refers to the presence of internal inclusions or external blemishes within a diamond, naturally formed over millions of years. The fewer the inclusions, the rarer and more valuable the diamond.

The GIA Clarity Scale ranges from Flawless (FL)—where no inclusions are visible under 10x magnification—to Included (I3), where inclusions can be seen with the naked eye. Common inclusions include pinpoints, feathers, and crystals. While microscopic inclusions do not impact beauty, larger or more prominent ones can affect both brilliance and durability.

At PurpleMay, we adhere to a strict standard of SI1 clarity and above, ensuring no visible inclusions in everyday wear. Each diamond is meticulously examined to allow for maximum light transmission, achieving a stunning, flawless sparkle.

The COLOR

Diamond colour is graded from D (colourless) to Z (noticeable tint), with colourless diamonds being the rarest and most valuable. At PurpleMay, we exclusively use natural diamonds graded G and above, guaranteeing a bright, pure, and visually striking appearance that enhances its luminous beauty.

PurpleMay meticulously selects diamonds of G colour grade and above, ensuring an exceptional level of transparency and brilliance. Whether classic white diamonds or rare fancy-coloured stones, our rigorous selection process guarantees outstanding colour performance.

The CARAT

A diamond’s carat weight determines its size, with 1 carat equalling 0.2 grams. While a higher carat weight generally signifies a larger diamond, its perceived size also depends on cut proportions and shape. For example, elongated shapes like oval or marquise may appear larger than round diamonds of the same weight.

When selecting a diamond, carat weight should always be considered alongside cut quality, ensuring the perfect balance of size and brilliance.

The Gemological Institute of America (GIA) is the world’s most trusted authority in diamond grading and certification. A GIA certificate provides a comprehensive assessment of a diamond’s 4Cs—Cut, Colour, Clarity, and Carat Weight—along with additional details such as fluorescence, symmetry, and polish.

Each diamond is meticulously evaluated by multiple expert gemologists, using advanced technology to ensure absolute accuracy and integrity. Unlike appraisals, which estimate a diamond’s value, a GIA certificate offers an unbiased, scientific analysis, allowing buyers to make confident, informed decisions.
